- West meets east, north meets south -
Three physical features dominate Azerbaijan: Caspian Sea, whose shoreline forms a natural border to the east, Big Kaukausus in the north, and an extensive lowland in central areas.
Azerbaijan has a total land area of approximately 86,000 square kilometers, less than 1% of the area of the former Soviet Union, that country was a part of. Of the three Transcaucasian states, Azerbaijan has the largest land area.
The climate is dry steppe climate. Drought periods occur.
